Side-Viewed Ranchu

Introduction

Ranchu has been known as the King of Goldfish among goldfish hobbyists throughout the world.

There are two main types of Ranchu worldwide: Top-Viewed Ranchu and Side-Viewed Ranchu.  We’ll discuss only Side-Viewed Ranchu in this article.  What are they?  Where did they come from?  Who developed them?  What is their bloodline/type and body structure, and how is the quality of Side-Viewed Ranchu determined?

Ranchu are the next generation of Lionhead.  Lionhead were originally established in China.  In the Meiji period of Japan, Lionhead was introduced to Japan.  The Japanese have developed and perfected Lionhead to become known as Ranchu by Japanese family named Ichikawa.  All appreciation and judgment of this Ranchu occurs from above.  Most people throughout the world know them as Top-Viewed Ranchu.

Lionhead (China) --->  Ranchu or TVR (Japan)

TO

In the mean time, While Japanese have developed and perfected Lionhead to Ranchu. Some of these stocks have been distributed to some Asian countries, including Thailand.  Thai breeders have developed these stocks to appreciate its side view. In Thai Goldfish Society, these side-viewed Lionhead divided by two classes as of Japanese Lionhead (Japanese Bloodline Side-view Ranchu) and Mixed Lionhead/Ranchu. The reason we, Thai Goldfish hobbyist, called them Japanese Lionhead because these fish come from early time when Japanese developing their Lionhead to Ranchu. Thai Breeder complete and perfect it’s side-viewed and gave Japanese name as credit and respect to Japanese Breeders.

Japanese Lionhead Bloodline

Mixed Lionhead/Ranchu Bloodline

In general, these two different kind of side-viewed Lionhead/Ranchu share same characteristic of smoothly curve back with V-Shape tails tuck. However, to determine whether it is a Japanese-Bloodline Side-viewed Lionhead/Ranchu or Mixed Bloodline Lionhead/Ranchu by checking the wen shape, skull shape, and overall body structure (Head-Body+Tails Ratio).  You will need experience in order to distinguish the two different types of Ranchu. Nowadays, breeders have developed mixed bloodline look almost like Japanese lionhead. In this article I preferred to show the difference between the Japanese Bloodline SVR and the Mixed Ranchu in the accompanying pictures.

Note: Mixed Bloodline is base on Lionhead. Japanese Bloodline is base on TVR.

All information are base on my personal opinion.

Nice article. I wish we could get people hear in the states to call JBSVR by their thai name, Japanese lionhead. I think it would clear up alot of confusion...

Ranchu(TVR)
Japanese lionhead (JBSVR)

Thx Dan,

These article take me sometime to understand where they're coming from.
